Advertising Consultants vs. Sales Representatives

At MN Business we refer to our ad sales representatives as Advertising Consultants.  

Why?  

Simple. Unlike any other sales person out there, we know the student market best. We are your MARKET! Some of us live on-campus and some live off-campus. We are involved in student groups, organizations, sports, clubs, greek life and so on. It is us, our friends and our peers that your business wants and needs to see the returns every business owner imagines. We can provide the insight and solutions necessary to promote your message on a multitude of platforms, which include print, digital, mobile, social and radio. 

The Sales Team  - Consists of one Advertising Manager, about 10 off-campus advertising consultants, one on-campus advertising consultant, one business analyst, and anywhere from two-three sales interns.  The students that make up the sales team are interdisciplinary.  Their majors range from: Business Finance, Business Marketing, Ag-Business, Communications, Psychology, and Biology, just to name a few.  All majors are welcome to apply.  

Learn by Doing Experience =  Members of the sales team learn the fundamentals of marketing and sales. They are responsible for managing and servicing accounts in their assigned territory, while building and maintaining relationships with hundreds of local businesses.  The Ad Manager works with the sales team to develop S.M.A.R.T.* goals each month.  These goals pertain to sales, personal and team goals.  The sales team works hand-in-hand with the design and marketing team to develop creative content and marketing ideas for small businesses without internal marketing personnel. * {Specific. The Design Team -  Traditionally, the MN design team are students from the Department of Art & Design. The design team consists of two student leaders, Art Director and Production Manager, in addition to six designers.  The team works on a variety of projects for both on and off campus business.  The students who make up the design team are the best in their class, many of which have won national awards in art and design. 

Learn by Doing Experience =  The design team functions as a mini-ad agency.  They learn how to work and communicate with clients, marketing professionals and sales professionals.  They are constantly challenged to manage many projects simultaneously, each leveraging their individual strengths as designers.  The Art Director oversees all of the art direction for MN Business, while the Production Manager organizes and designs the production and layout of the Mustang News print products, including the Mustang News paper and all special sections.  Designers are responsible for creating, editing and developing content for ad campaigns, branding, digital, print and social applications for across several platforms.

The Marketing Team - The MN Marketing team is a group of students from several majors across campus who  work collectively to increase readership and student engagement while building brand awareness for Mustang News, in addition to being the support to the sales team.  The team also works with select local businesses as a grass-roots street marketing team.  New to the team, is the addition of a Content Manager, responsible for developing stories for Branded Content. 

Learn by Doing Experience =  Like the sales team, the marketing team is taught the fundamentals of marketing and sales.  They provide tools for the sales team to be successful, which include sell sheets, analytics, prospecting and lead development, plus campaign management.  They receive hands on experience by writing the marketing plan each year; detailing events, campaigns and S.M.A.R.T.* goals for the team.  Then they operate from the plan to execute social media campaigns, print campaigns and events.  The marketing team is responsible for orchestrating and executing two of the largest on-campus events; SLO FEST and HOUSING FAIR. Both events require a dedicated team to coordinate vendors, plan the event, staff the event, and create a visual ad campaign to promote the event.  Additionally, the marketing team is taught how to work with a design team -- how to communication visual direction through creative briefs and mood-boards.   * {Specific.
